I have been reviewing my Hedgehog videos for the last few day, I first saw a Hedgehog go into one of my two Hog Houses and initially thought he was making a nest.  However I realised that he was actually taking nesting material OUT of one Hog House and INTO the other.  He is two videos stitched together of him moving the material…

So I think he is in residence of the second Hog House and not the first as I suspected :-)

I have just seen

I have just seen 3 Hedgehogs in my garden, one followed another and then attacked the third.  I think this must have been 2 males and a female and their minds were probably on mating although I think it may be a little early for this ? but I have no other reasonable explanation ?

Mating ?

Mating ? – but first there was no activity in or out of the Hoghouses last night :-(   But 2 Hedgehogs were caught on camera taking a lot of interest in each other, one followed the other around for quite a time and there was a lot of circling like this….

Is this prelude to mating ?

Interesting development

Interesting development last night. I have 2 Hog Houses but nothing has been in them all winter, I put a small twig across the entrance which would be moved if anything entered or left. This morning the twig has been moved, is this just a coincidence in that it happened the first night that Junior was released and was Junior having a peek or even staying in there. The reason I think it may have been Junior is that I know he used to use the Hog House before I caught him to send him to the Weirfield Wildlife Hospital for the winter.

I think I will put the Infra-red camera pointing at the Hog Houses tonight, that should tell me if a Hedgehog goes near them but I will not be able to identify Junior (or any other Hedgehog) as they all look alike to me :-)

I have just released

I have just released Junior. Thanks goes to Weirfield Wildlife Hospital for looking after Junior all winter and letting me pick him up to release in the same place as I caught him.

Junior stayed in the travel box for a while and then came out, he ignored the food I had put out for him and started to explore. He went along the house wall and then down the side, this leads to the road so I picked him back up and put him near the food again. He again ignored the food and started wandering again. After a few minutes he went under the garden fence into next door garden and I wished him well.

I believe that Junior used to sleep in next doors garden and there is only one way to get under the fence, but I don’t know if finding the gap was just luck, by smell (other Hedgehogs use the same gap) or from memory.

I just hope he keeps away from the road which isn’t busy but I don’t think he knows the Green Cross Code.

This made me laugh

This made me laugh, I have known all winter that I have a mouse in the corner near the conservatory.  I think its a field mouse and not a house mouse, anyway if you view the video below a Hedgehog has a drink and then wanders towards the camera, he stops for a scratch and then… well you can see for yourself :-)

A bit dark but

A bit dark but you can make out 2 Hedgehogs last night, a smaller one and a bigger one :-) Yes the moving verticle blinds in the conservatory is me trying to get a little peep without disturbing them :-)   The smaller Hedgehog just stays still and the larger goes to the feeding station after a ‘sniff’.

I have just seen 3 Hedgehogs (8:30pm) near my 2 feeding stations. 2 about the size on the video below and a third smaller one :-) I will have a look at any infra-red videos tomorrow morning and see how many it picked up.

I have at least 2 Hedgehogs, I got the infrared camera out last night and caught these two :-)   They seem to be a little nervous of each other and one goes into the feeding station and the other moves away…

I must get my infra-red video camera out sometime this week as I have just been watching a Hedgehog have some food from the feeding station and then have a drink a water.  I was watching from within the conservatory so he didn’t even know I was watching him :-)

Sad news

Sad news is that Junior 2 did not survive :-(   I found him outside during the day which is not a very good sign but when I took him to the wildlife hospital he seemed ok, but I think he was from a second litter and was definitely under weight to survive winter hibernation. RIP Junior 2 :-(

Junior 2

I went into the garden this afternoon and found a little Hedgehog having a drink in my pond, so I caught him and took him to the Weirfield Wildlife Hospital where Junior is, but I suppose I now need to call them Junior 1 and Junior 2.  He should survive the winter at the hospital which he probably would not have done in the wild as he was too small and didnt have enough fat to survive hibernation (unlike me).  I asked them to ring me when he needed to be released so I could release him at the same place as he was caught :-)
